Sleep Apnea is a sleep breathing disorder that affects an estimated five million Canadians. You are not alone!

While sleeping, the muscles in your upper airway relax causing snoring which can obstruct breathing completely—interrupting your sleep for 10 to 30 seconds at a time. An apnea is defined as a cessation of breathing for 10 seconds or more.

Severe sleep apnea can happen 30 times or more per hour. This places a lot of stress on the heart, lungs, and brain from being temporarily deprived of vital oxygen. Interrupted sleep also prevents you from reaching the deep level of REM sleep that we all need to feel rested and rejuvenated.

The noticeable effects of sleep apnea are more apparent during the waking day. Some symptoms include:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty focusing on tasks, poor concentration
  • Low energy
  • Irritability

Overtime, lack of proper sleep wears down an individual both emotionally and physically—impairing their work and quality of relationships.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) has been linked to other diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart failure and obesity.

There is good news… the gold standard for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea  is a CPAP machine.  CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure.  Simply, the device blows a gentle pressure of air down your airways to keep them open while you sleep.  This keeps your oxygen levels up and let’s your body relax into a deep sleep.

If you or your sleep partner are having trouble sleeping, experience excessive snoring or suspect possible apneas during your sleep, you may have sleep apnea.  We have designed a quiz to see if you are likely to test positive for sleep apnea.  If you are, then we would love to help you out with your testing and supplying you with the right CPAP and sleep apnea supplies.
